A secondary battery is disclosed, comprising an organic electrolytic solution contained in a casing and, disposed therein, a positive electrode comprised of a lithium-containing composite metal oxide as a cathode active material and a negative electrode com- prised of a carbonaceous material as an anode active material, wherein the positive and negative electrodes are arranged through a separator disposed therebetween and wherein the organic electrolytic solution has a water content of from 5 ppm to 450 ppm. The secondary battery has excellent current efficiency, cycle charac- teristics, storage characteristics and safety and, therefore, can be advantageously used in various elec- tric devices and electronic devices. The secondary battery of the present invention is especially advanta- geous in that a portable electronic device containing an IC element operative at a voltage of from 2.6 to 3.5 V can be drived by the use of a single battery of the present invention.
