22 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a suspension system for use on a snowmobile having a body, an endless snowmobile tread, and a guide rail movably connected to the body for supporting the endless snowmobile tread. The suspension apparatus includes primary adjustable suspension structure for continuously and adjustably spring biasing the guide rail toward a spaced apart distance from the body. The primary suspension structure include a torsion coil spring to bias the body and the guide rail toward the spaced apart distance. Secondary selective suspension structure is provided for selectively cooperating with the primary suspension structure to bias the guide rail and the body toward the spaced apart distance. The secondary selective suspension structure is used in the overload situation, such as when a second rider is being carried by the snowmobile. A spring member, preferably a leaf spring member, is provided as part of the secondary selective suspension structure. An engagement cam is provided to place the secondary spring member into and out of biasing engagement with the body or a portion of the snowmobile connected to the body to bias the guide rail away from the body.
