A secondary suspension for rail vehicles, comprises a steel helical spring or elastomeric spring, and a lifting element, such as an hydraulic cylinder, in series between a wagon body and a bogie. The lifting element raises and lowers the wagon body relative to the bogie. A locking device is actuable to lock the lifting element when the wagon body is in its raised position. A hydraulic or electromechanical chucking element may be arranged in parallel operating relation with the springs.
