ABSTRACT This invention relates to the transmission of data corresponding to call payment information for long distance telephone charges over an acoustically coupled dial up telephone line, using Bell Standard protocol for DTMF tone groups. The call payment information number represents a credit card number issued by the long distance telephone carrier, for the exclusive purpose of charging long distance telephone calls to a pre-authorized party, for billing purposes. The call payment charge card, or Calling Card as it is referred to in the industry, is a passive, plastic card, with the card number imprinted upon the card in embossed lettering. An active, electronic, alternative to the passive card is described which includes the basic functionality of the passive card, but allows the card number to be secured against unauthorized use, since the card number is not printed on the face of the card as with the passive card, and a secret access code is needed to access the number, which is stored in semiconductor memory, and is acoustically transmitted to the telephone carrier over the telephone line at the time the call is charged. -1-
