A lamp base (14) and mating socket (24) locking to prevent axial separation. A lamp base (14) has a locking bridge (18) with arms (32) extending between pairs of contact pins (16) spaced a distance from a surface of the lamp base (14) forming a gap (36). The contact pins (16) and locking bridge (18) extend through an opening (26) in the socket (24). Upon rotating the lamp base (14) relative to the socket (24), locking lands (30) extend under the arms (32) of the locking bridge (18) in the gap (36) preventing unintentional axial separation between the lamp base (14) and the socket (24). In one embodiment, a key notch (131) is formed in one of the arms (132) of the locking bridge (118) and a mating key pin (130) is formed on the socket (124) such that the lamp base (141) can fit within the socket (124) only in a single predetermined angular orientation. The locking bridge (118) extending between the contact pins (16) additionally protects the contact pins (16) from being damaged or bent. The present invention is particularly suited to environments susceptible to vibration or movement; for example, in the treatment of wastewater with ultraviolet radiation from gas discharge lamps.
