According to a first aspect of the present invention, cryptography without a dedicated microprocessor on the smart card is employed to provide authentication of both the smart card and the smart card reader, and wherein the cryptography provides only a preselected number of attempts at authentication, if not reset, before access to the smart card is denied permanently. According to a second aspect of the present invention, access to each of the memory zones of the smart card may be individually provided by cryptography, passwords or both.

Selon un premier aspect de la présente invention, on utilise la cryptographie dans une carte à puce pour obtenir une authentification de cette carte et de son lecteur, sans devoir se servir d'un microprocesseur spécialisé. La cryptographie ne permet qu'un nombre défini de tentatives d'authentification, sans réinitialisation, avant que l'accès à la carte à puce ne soit définitivement refusé. Selon un second aspect de la présente invention, l'accès à chacune des zones de mémoire de la carte à puce peut être protégé individuellement par cryptographie, par des mots de passe ou par les deux.
