An alarm and locking device (1) for sliding doors and windows is provided. The device incorporates a suction pad (3) for attachment to a fixed door or window frame adjacent to an edge of the sliding section of the door or window, such that movement of the sliding door or window into contact with the device (1) actuates alarm means associated with the device. The method of attachment of the alarm and locking device (1) employs a flexible suction pad (3) enclosing the lower end of the device, which is applied to the glass panel of the door and then distented at its centre by the action of an over-centre lever (4), causing a partial vacuum between the pad and the glass panel.
