The invention relates to a security element with an optically variable structure having an embossed structure with linear embossed elements and a coating, the embossed structure and the coating being so disposed that at least parts of the coating are completely visible upon perpendicular viewing but concealed upon oblique viewing. Since substantially the total coating is formed from nonlinear primitives which are characterized by the parameters of outline form, size, color and orientation, and so combined with the embossed structure that different information is visible upon a change of viewing direction, the falsification security of the security element can be increased. The invention relates further to a method for producing such a security element, to a data carrier having such a security element, and to the use of such a security element or data carrier for product protection.
