The advent of CCD's (30) has made high resolution visible wavelength sensors relatively inexpensive. Similar resolution thermal imagers (10) are currently far too expensive for most security sensor applications. In order to make a high performance intrusion sensor combining the two disparate wavelength sensors, it would be beneficial for both sensors to have identical spatial resolution and response times. However a high spatial resolution thermal sensor is very expensive whereas a simple and effective sensor can be made with just two thermal elements in conjunction with an optical lens and/or mirror arrangement to perform image segmentation and overlay functions. This invention provides a means and method to match the field of view (25, 26 and 27) by sectorisation (a-n) (a'-n') and sensor signal output processing (38) of a high resolution sensor (28) eg (visible wavelength) and a low resolution sensor (10) eg (thermal) to provide a low cost detection device which achieves a substantially higher performance than one which only logically combines the outputs of the two individual detectors.
