A seed and fertilizer placement apparatus has a shank assembly including an upright main body that couples directly to a conventional trip on aconventional implement. A socket on the bottom of the upright member engages the top end of a downwardly and rearwardly sloping seed knife. The knife has a flat leading face sloping rearwardly at an angle of 10° to open a seed furrow with a firm, undisturbed soil base. Spaced behind the seed opener and a following seedtube is a fertilizer knife that slopes outwardly to one side and also slopes rearwardly at an angle of 15° to form a fertilizer furrow somewhat shallower than and immediately beside the seed furrow. The fertilizer knife displaces soil onto the seed in the seed furrow and acts to provide some packing of the soil onto the seed. Following the fertilizer knife is a fertilizer tube for delivering fertilizer into the fertilizer furrow. A packer wheel tracks the knives to pack both the seed and fertilizer furrows.
