ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention is directed to a seed boot and fertilizer knife which can be attached in combination to the shank of most medium or heavy duty cultivators and which permit three field operations to be carried out simultaneously: the breaking up or working of the soil by the shovel of the cultivator; the deposition of seed into seed beds; and the delivery of fertilizer below and to the side of the seed bed thereby maximizing the delivery of fertilizer to the seeds while minimizing the risk of fertilizer burn. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, seed may be deposited in substantially paired rows. Means are also provided for promoting the even distribution of seeds into paired rows, where paired row seeding is desired. The fertilizer knife of the invention features lighter draft, enabling it to move easily through the soil with less disturbance of the seed bed. The action of the knife follows that of the cultivator. A fertil- izer conduit rests on the upper edge of the knife and deposits fertilizer into the groove or band cut by the knife as the knife moves through the soil.
