ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a sign system using a plurality of portable character forming segments for forming characters on a backboard. The backboard is provided with segment mounting means for mounting the segments in different outline forming positions, which when all occupied, make a generally rectangular and essentially continuous outline. The backboard is additionally provided with cross member mounting means for mounting a cross member within the outline. The arrangement is such that different characters are formed or outlined on the backboard by selective inclusion and omission of the segments and the cross member at their respective positions.
