ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A segmented shell structure of improved profile and foundation construction is described which is particularly suited for storage of bulk materials. As in conventional domes, the structure consists of a number of congruent, wedge-shaped segments of trapezoidal panels which slope inwardly to join at a peak, forming a dome-like structure with a slight outward bulge. The base-to-peak angle is selected so as to maximize the ratio of the volume of material stored to the size of dome and land area required. The angle of change between adjacent panels of a segment is selected so as to reduce wasted head room yet provide sufficient clearance between the material pile and dome for operation of machinery. Fewer rings of panels are required for a dome of equal capacity. The structure incorporates a combination concrete foundation ring and retaining wall which permits more efficient utilization of land area.
