In a seismic data acquisition system that uses a vibratory source an actual groundforce signal is recorded. This groundforce signal includes, in addition to a reference sweep signal, noise including harmonic distortion. This recorded groundforce signal is used to derive a filter that is used for filtering seismic data that has been generated by the source and reflected by subsurface reflectors to suitable detectors at the surface. The filter is derived by dividing, in the frequency domain, a short duration wavelet by the time derivative of the ground force signal.
