ABSTRACT A method of identifying nonlinear optical media with large third order coefficients of susceptibility and means adapted to utilize such media are disclosed. In particular a method of selecting specific superlattice materials is presented. Optical devices requiring fast response times can particularly employ such superlattices advantageously. Three nonlinear optical devices are presented. The first is an optical switch formed by an interface between a nonlinear medium and a linear medium. The second is a Fabry-Perot etalon adapted to function as a bistable optical device. The third is a superlattice phase conjugate mirror.
