ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is disclosed a process for selectively removing and recovering sulfur dioxide from a gas stream containing the same by contacting the gas with an absorbent (an aqueous solution of a piperazinone or a morpholinone) and thermally regenerating the absorbent (i.e. releasing the sulfur dioxide from the absorbent) for reuse in the contacting step.
