2049345 9011915 PCTABS00002 A tensionless apparatus for a seat belt and/or a shoulder harness retractor assembly is provided which requires activation of a manual overt actuator (62) and subsequent manual belt protraction to engage the tension relieving mechanism (40, 58) from a released state. The apparatus includes a lock control disc (50) having a slot (100) for realizing a comfort or ''memory'' function which allows a limited motion of the user below a predetermined distance and subsequent return to the tensionless position. Belt protraction beyond the predetermined position again shifts the tension relieving mechanism (40, 58) into the released state. The tension relieving mechanism (40, 58) may also be released by a door actuator (64) which rotates an unlocking disc (38) when the vehicle door is opened.
