ABSTRACT A process for the production of 3,4-dimethyl-1-ethylbenzene by selective alkylation of dimethylbenzene with ethylene. The process is carried out in the presence of a crystalline zeolite catalyst having a silica to alumina mole ratio of a least about 12 and a Constraint Index of greater than 2 and up to about 12. The selectivity with which the various isomers of the starting material are converted to the desired product can be enhanced by catalyst pretreatment such as steaming or coking. The preferred zeolite is ZSM-5. 0196
