Abstract Selective Bromination Process Alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons and their halogenated substitution products are partially brominated in a liquid phase reaction within the still head of a distillation system. Liquid bromine is introduced in the still head through a side-arm, is mixed with condensed hydrocarbon in a mixing zone and reacted in a chamber when irradiated with UV or visible light of wavelength shorter than 550nm. The higher boiling partially brominated hydrocarbon formed is recovered via a distillation column and unreacted materials are recycled. The brominated products, particularly tetrafluoro- p-xylyl bromide and pentafluorobenzyl bromide, are useful intermediates in the synthesis of, for example, insecticidal compounds.
