ABSTRACT A selective calling receiver is described having a receiver section for demodulating a carrier wave modulated by a calling signal, a decoder connected to the output of the receiver section for selectively receiving the demodulated calling signals and controlling the receiving operation and a switch for supplying power from a power source to the receiving section intermittently under control of the decoder. This intermittent powering reduces power consumption and is typical of prior devices. To reduce the power consumption further the decoder is also powered intermittently according to the invention. This is done by supplying clock pulses continuously to the decoder and varying these clock pulses according to whether the set is receiving or not. For example, the clock frequency may be made greater during the receiving period than during the non-receiving period.
