Harps are musical instruments with a great number of strings which are not dampened through a felt lined mechanism, as is the case in the piano or the harpsichord. Because they have to deal with so many strings, harp players are often confronted with the challenge of controlling the duration of a sound (sustain) or preventing sympathetic vibrations of strings from occurring. Harpists rely on their hands to dampen strings; however, since they also need both hands to pluck the strings, choices have to be made. So far, no satisfactory mechanical solution has been offered to help them overcome or minimize this problem. I have designed a system which addresses such problem. I have built it, and it has been successfully tested by a professional performing harpist. Because my invention is about to be introduced to a large public of musicians and harp makers, I would be grateful if the Canadian Intellectual Property Office was to consider my patent application as being time sensitive.
