ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present application discloses a process for the selective deuteration of hydroxyl bearing carbon atoms in aliphatic alcohols, particularly cyclic aliphatic polyols using hot deuterium oxide and deuterated Raney nickel as the exchange reaction medium. The compounds prepared by the process of the present invention are useful in isotope exchange reactions used in the preparation of organic compounds in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms in the organic compound is replaced by deuterium or tritium.
