The invention concerns a method for coding an original mesh (M) representing a three-dimensional object, which consists in determining a simple meshing (M0) having a reduced number of defined faces each defined by vertices and edges, then coefficients in a wavelet base of a function (f) whereof said source mesh is the image defined on said simple mesh (M0), so as to supply successive refined meshes (M j). The method is characterised in that each of the faces of said meshes (M j) is subdivided into a limited number of facets to form the higher level mesh (M j+1), the subdivisions of said surface corresponding only to those required for observing an affinity condition of said function (f) on said face. The invention also concerns the corresponding method for reconstructing the mesh.

L'invention concerne un procédé de codage d'un maillage source (M) représentatif d'un objet en trois dimensions, dans lequel on détermine un maillage simple (M0) présentant un nombre réduit de faces définies chacunes par des sommets et des arêtes, puis des coefficients dans une base d'ondelettes d'une fonction (f) dont ledit maillage source est l'image définie sur ledit maillage simple (M0), de façon à fournir des maillages affinés successifs (Mj). Selon ce procédé, chacune des faces d'un desdits maillages (Mj) est subdivisée en un nombre limité de facettes pour former le maillage de niveau supérieur (Mj+1), les subdivisions de ladite face correspondant uniquement à celles nécessaires pour respecter une condition d'affinité de ladite fonction (f) sur ladite face. L'invention concerne également le procédé correspondant de reconstruction du maillage.
