There is disclosed a method and apparatus for selectively monitoring tritium containing species in a gas. The apparatus comprises a hygroscopic scintillator element suitable for selective response to tritiated water vapour and other hydrophilic tritiated species in a gas, which scintillator comprises a solid scintillator material having a layer of hygroscopic material thereon. Measuring means are provided to measure any light emitted from the scintillator element, the amount of which emitted light provides a measure of the tritium containing species in the gas. The method comprises (a) providing a hygroscopic scintillator element as identified above for contact with a gas to be tested; (b) measuring the light emitted from said hygroscopic scintillator using measuring means, the amount of said light emitted from said scintillator element providing a measure of the activity of the tritiated water vapour or said hydrophilic tritiated species in the gas.

Procédé et appareil permettant de surveiller sélectivement des espèces contenant du tritium dans un gaz. Ledit appareil comprend un élément scintillateur hygroscopique adapté pour une réponse sélective à la vapeur d'eau tritiée et à d'autres espèces tritiées hydrophiles présentes dans un gaz, ledit scintillateur comportant une matière solide couverte d'une couche de matière hygroscopique. Un dispositif de mesure permet de mesurer toute lumière émise par l'élément scintillateur, la quantité de lumière émise fournissant une mesure de l'espèce contenant du tritium dans le gaz. Ledit procédé consiste (a) à mettre un élément scintillateur hygroscopique tel qu'identifié ci-dessus en contact avec le gaz à analyser, (b) à mesurer la lumière émise par ledit scintillateur hygroscopique à l'aide du dispositif de mesure, la quantité de lumière émise par l'élément scintillateur fournissant une mesure de l'activité de la vapeur d'eau tritiée ou desdites espèces tritiées hydrophiles présentes dans le gaz.
