29 ABSTRACT: "Selective scrambling in the Compact Disc system." In the method of recording information in an optical record carrier, the information first being encoded from blocks of m data bits into blocks of n1+n2 channel bits, which blocks of channel bits each comprise a block of n1 information bits and a block of n2 merging bits, which merging bits are dimensioned so as to minimize the d.c. unbalance or digital sum value, those parts of the information for which the d.c. unbalance no longer meets predetermined criteria are subjected to an additional modulation process (scrambling) in which the information is modulated aselectively. During read-out the relevant parts are demodulated (descrambled) in an inverse manner. (Figure 3).
