This invention provides a selenium composition that may be applied to pastures and soils to treat selenium deficiency in soils, plants and grazing animals. Known formulations use either sodium selenate or barium selenate in a slow release form. However these known compounds either are not sufficiently long-lasting or cannot rapidly boost selenium levels in pastures. These problems have been overcome by an agricultural composition that has an effective amount of a mixture of barium selenate in a slow release form and a water soluble selenium compound. The ratio, on the basis of elemental selenium, of water soluble selenium compound to barium selenate is between 10:90 and 30:70. The composition is able to provide a selenium boost and maintain selenium levels in pastures for long periods.
