An underreamer for well drilling comprises pivotally extendible roller cutters that extend slightly beyond the diameter of the pilot drill bit but are retained in their retracted position by the casing. Upon encountering an obstruction, the underreamer is pushed out of the casing, allowing the outer edges of the cutters to contact the obstruction. Continued downward pressure of the drill stem causes the roller arms to pivot outward to a fully extended position in which the cutters enlarge the hole to a diameter larger than the casing by rotation of the drilling stem. The advance of the casing relative to the underreamer forces the cutters to retract into the casing.
L'invention concerne un élargisseur permettant de forer un puits, qui comprend des molettes pivotantes s'étendant légèrement au-delà du diamètre du trépan pilote mais maintenues en position rétractée par le tubage. Lorsqu'il rencontre une obstruction, l'élargisseur est poussé hors du tubage, ce qui permet aux bords extérieurs des molettes de venir en contact avec l'obstruction. Une pression aval continue appliquée sur la tige de forage entraîne le pivotement des bras de molette vers l'extérieur vers une position complètement étendue dans laquelle les molettes élargissent le trou afin d'obtenir un diamètre plus large que celui du tubage par rotation de la tige de forage. L'avancement du tubage par rapport à l'élargisseur force les molettes à se rétracter dans ledit tubage.
