ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A broom cover is provided for use in a street cleaner having a rotary pickup broom. The broom cover prevents debris trapped in the bristles of the pickup broom from being ejected at the rear of the broom and recirculates the debris to the sweeping chamber by enclosing substantially all of the top and rear portions of the pickup broom. Means connecting the cover and the support member is provided which will self adjust in order to maintain contact between the broom cover and the broom despite gaps created by the rotation of the broom, changes in diameter of the broom due to wear, and changes in the contour of the surface to be cleaned. In order to prevent damage to the cover and the sweeper when the cover hits relatively large immovable objects protruding from the surface to be cleaned, the cover can slide within the slot of the support member. In order to permit easy access to the broom and the internal areas of the sweeper despite the broom cover, the support member is pivotally attached to the sweeper.
