A self-aligning piston assembly (13) has a piston member (14) having a sidewall (19) for slidable displacement within a bore (12), the piston member having (14) an inner curved surface (22), the piston assembly (13) having an inner race member (23) having means to attach to a connecting member, the inner race member (23) having a curved surface (29) complementary to the inner curved surface (22) and an elastomer member (30) disposed therebetween substantially in the form of a sphere to provide a spherical type mounting of the piston to the connecting member. Utilizing a spherical type mounting, axial rigidity is maintained, yet any side loading which acts through the connecting member of manufacturing tolerance are absorbed through the spherical elastomer to prevent misalignment or cooking of the piston within the bore during stroking. Utilizing the invention, excessive wear and fluid leakage by the piston is avoided since misalignment is absorbed by the elastomer member.

Un ensemble à piston à alignement automatique (13) comporte un piston (14) présentant une paroi latérale (19) coulissant dans un alésage (12), et une surface interne courbe (22). L'ensemble à piston (13) comprend, par ailleurs, une bague intérieure (23) dotée de moyens permettant sa fixation à un élément de raccordement et présentant une surface courbe (29) complémentaire de la surface interne courbe (22), un élément élastomère (30) de forme relativement sphérique étant placé entre ces derniers de manière à produire un support de piston sphérique relié à l'élément de raccordement. L'utilisation d'un support sphérique permet de conserver la rigidité axiale bien que toute charge latérale agissant dans l'élément de raccordement dans les limites des tolérances de fabrication soit absorbée par l'élastomère sphérique de manière à empêcher le décentrage ou le basculement sur le côté du piston dans l'alésage pendant sa course. Le système selon l'invention empêche une usure excessive et toute fuite de fluide du piston, le décentrage étant absorbé par l'élément élastomère.
