A retractable metal insert assembly for a core sand mold having at least one sand core element provided with walls to define an opening communicating with a molding cavity, the walls presenting a stepped neck which is dimensionally accurate within ~ .002 inches, the mold further including a metal support associated with the core element. The insert assembly comprises: (a) a metal guide detachably secured to the metal support; (b) a metal chill element extendible through the opening to present a metal molding surface which insert has walls mateable with the stepped neck for accurate alignment; and (c) biasing means acting between the guide and insert to urge the mating walls together for self positioning of the insert. The insert assembly can be repeatedly reused in a method of making castings.

Cette invention concerne un insert métallique amovible pour moule de moulage au sable comportant au moins un noyau présentant des parois définissant un canal de communication avec une cavité de moulage, les parois comportant un col à gradin caractérisé par une précision dimensionnelle à 0,002 pouce près, le moule comportant par ailleurs un support métallique associé au noyau. L'insert comprend : a) un guide métallique detachable fixé au support métallique; b) un élément refroidisseur en métal insérable par le canal de communication et matérialisant une surface métallique de moulage, élément présentant des parois s'adaptant au col à gradin de l'insert pour un alignement précis; et c) un moyen élastique agissant entre le guide et l'insert de manière à forcer l'un contre l'autre les parois conjuguées et assurer le positionnement automatique de l'insert. L'objet de l'invention peut être réutilisé à répétition pour la fabrication pièces moulées.
