The self-attaching female fastener (20) of this invention includes a re- entrant groove (30) having a V-shaped bottom wall (36) including relatively inclined bottom faces (38) of equal width having an arcuate apex (40) centered beneath the restricted opening to the groove (30). A die drives a panel portion through the restricted groove opening against the bottom faces (38), driving the panel portion into the apex (40) and inwardly beneath the inclined inner side wall (32) and outwardly beneath the inclined outer side wall (34) of the groove (30), resulting in a better installation and accommodating a wider range of panel thicknesses. The V-shaped bottom wall (36) also centers and balances the rolls during the rolling process resulting in a more accurate cross-section of the fastener (20).
