The application contained herein pertains to the control of animals through a mechanical device that increases the safety of the handlers, and reduces the stress placed on the animals. The head gate assembly uses pressure applied to an animal's neck to restrain the animal during times of inspection. This application uses the momentum of the animal to trigger the closure of the head gate while a self ratcheting latch ensure closure and locking of the head gate assembly. Once captured, the animal is serviced. Releasing the animal through a rear control bar allows the animal to proceed forward through an unobstructed route while at the same time, preparing the gate for the next trigger. Once cleared, the following animal entering the gate is presented a clear unobstructed path resulting in reduced stress.
