An apparatus (2) for steering a nosewheel on an aircraft, or the like, while the aircraft is on the ground. The apparatus includes a steering shaft (20) that engages a cluster (40, 50) of gears and transfers torque from a steering command to the gears. The steering shaft is rotatable from a centered position in response to steering torque. A centering mechanism (6) imparts a counter- torque on the cluster of gears to restore the steering shaft to the centered position when steering torque is released. The gear cluster comprises two drive gears (42, 52) that accurately guide the steering shaft to the centered position under the influence of the centering mechanism. The gear cluster is configured to minimize and compensate for gear wear, permitting accurate and consistent centering of the main shaft each time a steering torque is released.
L'invention concerne un appareil (2) permettant de diriger le train avant d'un avion, ou autre similaire, lorsque l'avion est au sol. L'appareil comprend un axe de direction (20) qui vient en prise avec un groupe (40, 50) d'engrenages et transmet un couple depuis une commande de direction vers les engrenages. L'axe de direction peut pivoter depuis une position centrée en réponse à un couple de direction. Un mécanisme de rappel (6) imprime un couple de réaction sur le groupe d'engrenages afin de replacer l'axe de direction en position centrée lorsque le couple de direction est libéré. Le groupe de direction comprend deux engrenages d'entraînement (42, 52) qui guident précisément l'axe de direction vers la position centrée sous l'effet du mécanisme de rappel. Le groupe d'engrenages est configuré de manière à minimiser et à compenser l'usure des engrenages, et permet le centrage précis et constant de l'axe principal chaque fois qu'un couple de guidage est libéré.
