The self centering tool comprises a telescoping body having a bottom surface, an elongated base member and a midpoint along the base member. The telescoping body also and a right and left extension members movably mounted to the right and left sides of the base member for movement along the base member. The right and left extension members have a right and left fingers respectively, protruding from the bottom surface. A gearing system and a knob are provided on the telescoping body for moving the fingers equal distances from the midpoint, in opposite directions along the base member. A ruler is affixed to the base member and extends longitudinally beyond the length of the base member. There is also provided a method for measuring the position of an oarlock relative to the centerline of a racing shell using the centering tool and its midpoint as a centerline reference.
