A cross member for use on a flat bed trailer comprises a horizontally oriented top flange having a flat top surface. A vertically oriented leg extends downward from a mid-point of the top flange, and a horizontally oriented bottom flange has a bottom surface and side walls tapering upward and inward from outer edges of the bottom surface to the leg at an angle sufficient to substantially shed road debris. The width of the bottom flange is less than a width of the top flange.
