Apparatus and method for molding vertically tapered objects, such as concrete blocks, whereby the finished unit is vertically de-molded without the need to flip the mold, and without the need for mechanical power for retracting one or more movable mold walls (liners). A movable actuating member is in contact with each movable liner. The lower end of the actuating member projects below the adjacent cavity walls when the movable wall is in its open position so that a support surface can contact the lower end of the actuating member and force it upwardly and inwardly as the support surface and the mold are brought together, thereby tilting the movable liner inwardly to its closed position. The lower end of the actuating member moves downwardly and outwardly when the support surface and the mold are separated so as to allow the movable liner to retract to its open position.
