There is disclosed an apparatus for driving surgical fasteners. The apparatus includes a frame portion which provides a body extending therefrom. The apparatus provides a cartridge assembly having a proximal cartridge mounting portion maintained in a distal end portion of said body portion and a distal cartridge housing movably connected to the proximal cartridge mounting portion and having a tissue engaging surface thereon. An articulation apparatus is associated with the body portion for moving the distal cartridge housing portion relative to the proximal mounting cartridge portion. The cartridge assembly additionally provides an anvil member, the latter having a fastener forming surface thereon and mounted relative to the cartridge housing portion of the cartridge assembly so as to be moveable between an open position wherein the fastener forming surface is spaced from the tissue engaging surface and a close position wherein the fastening forming surface is in alignment with the tissue engaging surface of the cartridge housing portion. The body portion includes a member for moving the anvil member between the open and closed positions. The surgical fasteners may be ejected from the cartridge housing portion of the cartridge assembly.
