ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel methods and systems are provided herein for sealing the sur- face controls of an oil and/or gas well. The method includes the steps of directly forcing a hydrogel into the surface controls of an oil and/or gas well by applying a hydraulic force of up to 6,000 psi or more directly against the hydrogel. The hydrogel is then frozen therein in situ, thereby forming a hydrate plug to prevent the egress of oil and/or gas. The creation of such hydrate enables removal of the surface controls, pipeline sections, etc., with great safety.
