An engine utilizing a circulating working fluid comprises an outer container, an inner container positioned inside the outer container to define a longitudinally extending fluid flow path, the inner container having first and second spaced apart portions, the first portion being at a higher temperature than the second portion when the engine is in use; a passageway extending between the first and second portions via the fluid flow path; a displacer movably mounted inside the first portion of the inner container for movement between a first position and a second position; a piston movably mounted inside the second portion of the inner container for movement between a first position and a second position; and, a heat source for providing heat to the first portion, the inner container and the passageway defining a sealed region within which the working fluid is circulated. the Stirling engine according to this construction may be used as a portable generator or incorporated into a portable light source.
