ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is provided a self-contained presence detector useful, for example, as an automatic door sensor. The detector includes light transmitting means, light detecting means, and electrical circuitry associated with the light transmitting and detecting means. Each of the light transmitting means has a light emitter such as a light emiting diode and a lens assembly to project controlled generated light beams. The light sensing means has detection areas intersecting in such a manner as to form a detection pattern through a detection area. In one embodiment wherein the detector is used to control an automatic door, the detector is disposed on a vertical framing mullion or door jamb adjacent the door in such a manner as to minimize accessibility to the detector chassis whenever the door is closed.
