This invention relates to the synthesis of a latex which can be used in making water-reducible self-crosslinking coating compositions, such as paints, which contain no or extremely low levels of volatile organic compounds. Coatings which are formulated with the latex of this invention offer an environmental advantage as well as excellent solvent resistance, excellent flexibility and excellent ultra-violet light resistance. This invention more specifically discloses a water-reducible coating composition which is comprised of (1) water; (2) a resin having repeat units which are derived from (a) about 30 to about 75 weight percent vinyl aromatic monomers, (b) about 20 to about 65 weight percent of alkyl acrylate monomers, (c) about 1 to about 8 weight percent alkyl propenoic acid monomers and (d) about 0.5 to about 5 weight percent acryloxyalkenyltrialkoxysilane monomers, based on 100 weight percent monomers; (3) a wetting agent; and (4) a defoamer. Gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane is a representative example of a highly preferred acryloxyalkenyl-trialkoxysilane monomer.
Dans cette invention, on décrit la synthèse d'un latex pouvant servir à fabriquer des préparations pour revêtement auto-réticulables et diluables à l'eau, telles que des peintures, à teneur nulle ou extrêmement faible en composés organiques volatils. Les revêtements préparés à partir du latex décrit dans la présente invention présentent un avantage sur le plan environnemental, ainsi qu'une excellente résistance aux solvants, une excellente souplesse et une excellente résistance aux ultra-violets. Plus précisément, on décrit dans cette invention une préparation pour revêtement diluable à l'eau, composée (1) d'eau; (2) d'une résine dont les motifs sont constitués (a) d'environ 30 à environ 75 % en poids de monomères aromatiques vinyliques, (b) d'environ 20 à environ 65 % en poids de monomères d'acrylate d'alkyle, (c) d'environ 1 à 8 % en poids de monomères d'acide alkylpropénoïque et (d) d'environ 0,5 à environ 5 % en poids de monomères d'acryloxyalkényltrialkoxysilane, basés sur un pourcentage en poids de monomères de 100 %; (3) d'un agent mouillant ; et (4) d'un agent antimoussant. Le gamma-méthacryloxypropyltriméthoxysilane est un exemple représentatif d'un monomère acryloxyalkényl-trialkoxysilane qui est fortement préféré.
