The invention relates to a composition for enhancing the strength or sizing properties of a cellulosic fiber, comprising a) a self-emulsifying isocyanate and b) a coupling agent. The invention also relates to a kit of the composition, a process for enhancing the strength or sizing of a cellulosic fiber, products made from the process, and modified cellulosic fiber. The coupling agent and self-emulsifiable isocyanante can be added at a number of points in the paper making process. In one embodiment, the coupling agent and self-emulsifiable isocyanate are independently added to the cellulosic fiber at any point between the exit of the machine chest (5) and the screens (11) just prior to the headbox. In one embodiment, the coupling agent and self- emulsifiable isocyanate are added to the cellulosic fiber before or after the screens (11). In one embodiment, the coupling agent and self-emulsifiable isocyanate are added to the cellulosic fiber at the stuff or headbox (6). In a prefered embodiment, the self-emulsifiable isocyanate and coupling agent are added at the fan pump (8). Even more preferably, the self-emulsifiable isocyanate is added just prior to the fan pump (8) and the coupling agent just after the fan pump (8). The coupling agent and self-emulsifiable isocyanate can be added at the same point, either in separate lines or as a premixed composition, or at different points in the process.
L'invention concerne une composition améliorant la résistance ou les propriétés collantes d'une fibre cellulosique, laquelle composition renferme: a) un isocyanate auto-émulsifiant et b) un agent de couplage. L'invention concerne également un kit de la composition, un procédé améliorant la résistance ou le collant d'une fibre cellulosique, des produits obtenus à partir du procédé, et une fibre cellulosique modifiée. L'agent de couplage et l'isocyanate auto-émulsifiable peuvent être ajoutés en différents points durant le processus de fabrication du papier. Selon un mode de réalisation, l'agent de couplage et l'isocyanate auto-émulsifiable sont ajoutés indépendamment à la fibre cellulosique au niveau d'un point quelconque entre la sortie du cuvier de machine (5) et les épurateurs (11) juste avant la caisse de tête. Selon un autre mode de réalisation, l'agent de couplage et l'isocyanate auto-émulsifiable sont ajoutés à la fibre cellulosique avant ou après les épurateurs (11). Selon un autre mode de réalisation encore, l'agent de couplage et l'isocyanate auto-émulsifiable sont ajoutés à la fibre cellulosique au niveau du cuvier de pâte ou de la caisse de tête (6). Selon un mode de réalisation préféré, l'agent de couplage et l'isocyanate auto-émulsifiable sont ajoutés au niveau de la pompe de mélange (8). Idéalement, l'isocyanate auto-émulsifiable est ajouté juste avant la pompe de mélange (8) et l'agent de couplage est ajouté juste après la pompe de mélange (8). L'agent de couplage et l'isocyanate auto-émulsifiable peuvent être ajoutés au niveau du même point, soit séparément soit sous forme d'une composition pré-mélangée, ou en des points différents du processus.
