ABSTRACT This invention relates to the means for amplifying and focussing the radiant energy of a laser. In the usual method, parallel rays are selected out for amplification by attenuating all other rays from the input energy flash or pulse. The result is that only a very small portion of the original energy pulse is utilized. To focus the radiant energy output the rays are passed through a lense system, and a secondary loss of energy occurs as the rays pass through the various surfaces of the lenses. My invention overcomes these disadvantages by, firstly, shifting the amplification process to a prior phase before the rays are selected for parallelism, and secondly, by adapting the shape of the laser body to optically focus the amplified rays by internal reflections, thus avoiding the losses to the surfaces of a lense system. It is known that when a population inversion of the contributing electrons is triggered to release energy in the lasing substance, the new photons mainly move in the same direction as the triggering photons. This factor permitsamplification to proceed prior to and during focussing, and a large proportion of the original flash energy is thus utilized. A further advantage is achieved by the automatic optical focussing of the rays, which makes the output beam as narrow and sharp as desired for whatever type of laser application is required.
