ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The S-gene protein of a self-incompatible plant in substantially pure form is described. The protein may be used in control of pollen-tube growth, for example, as a natural gametocide to control, induce or promote self-incompatibility and interspecific incompatibility. The protein also may be used in genetic manipulation of plants to create self- incompatible cultivars for the economic production of hybrid seed. - 25 -
