ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A building block is disclosed for a mortar and block wall to be formed by multiple blocks stacked in rows in longitudinally overlapping relation and bonded together with mortar. The block comprises top and bottom support surfaces with a first of the top and bottom support sur- faces comprising abutment surface means located in a first plane. Spacer means extend from the other, second of the top and bottom support surfaces to a second plane parallel to the first plane. The abutment surface means and spacer means are complementarily located on the first and second support surfaces, respectively, whereby in the wall with blocks in adjacent rows arranged in longitudinally over- lapping relation, abutment surface means of one row of blocks abut with spacer means of blocks of an adjacent upper or lower row to locate the blocks in the one row in longi- tudinally level attitude with respect to the blocks of the adjacent row. The abutment surface means are spaced in- wardly from side edges of the first support surface whereby first mortar contacting areas on the first support surface extend along the entire length of each lateral side of the first support surface. The spacer means are spaced inward- ly from lateral side edges of the second support surface whereby second mortar contacting areas on the second support surface extend along the entire length of each lateral side of the second support surface. The first and second mortar contacting areas are complementarily located on the first and second support surfaces whereby in a wall with blocks in adjacent rows arranged in longitudinally overlapping relation and with abutment surface means of one row of blocks in abutment with spacer means of blocks of an adjacent row locating the blocks in one row in longitudinally level attitude, the first mortar contacting areas and the second mortar contacting areas are vertically spaced through- out their areas an acceptable width for a conventional mortar joint when the block in said one row are in trans- versely level attitude with the blocks of adjacent row.
