A self-loading log transporter and a method for loading logs onto a log transporter are disclosed. The log transporter has a vehicle frame; a receiving deck on the vehicle frame for receiving logs between first and second walls; a rail extending generally parallel to and above the receiving deck; a carriage movable along the rail; a block mounted on the carriage; a winch on the vehicle frame; a cable on the winch having a free end extending through said block; means on the free end of the cable for detachably affixing the free end of the cable to a log; and drag means for resisting forward movement of the carriage along the rail. The rail has a portion extending rearwardly of a rearward end of the receiving deck.
