ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A self-maintaining winch, particularly for use on yachts to increase the tension applied to the foresail sheet, has a barrel and an annular resilient member removably fitted to the barrel at one end thereof. In operation, a first end turn leading to a load, a second end turn leading to a tail, and at least one intermediate turn are placed around the winch such that the second end turn is jammed between the annular resilient member and the intermediate turn. The invention enables the winch to be operated without the necessity for manually maintaining tension in the tail to facilitate the maintaining of the tension in the tail while the winch is being operated.
