2057918 9014050 PCTABS00002 This invention provides a hand-held, self-powered, reciprocating plaque-preventing tool, for use by the general consumer for personal dental hygiene. The device comprises an outer housing (1), including a hand grip, and defining a battery section (2), a motor section (3), a transmission section (4) and a tool bit head section (5), in longitudinal extension. The tool bit head defines a transverse aperture (25); the tool bit and transmission are driven by a battery operated electric motor (12) which drives a rotatable transmission shaft (15); which in turn drives an eccentric cam member (17) for causing reciprocating motion of a tool bit (45). The device can be used for the abrading or filing of teeth and the cleaning or removal of plaque or plaque causing material from the surfaces of the teeth.
