Refilling and compacting ground trenches dug for the purpose of laying utility lines and the like is often a time consuming job demanding the use of heavy equipment better employed in more productive activities and, of course, the time and cost of a relatively high skilled operator. In addition, the job is often complicated by lack of maneuvering room for such equipment. The present specification discloses a self propelled apparatus which is particularly well adapted for this refilling and compacting such trenches, the apparatus comprising a generally rectangular rigid frame having a pair of elongate side members, the side members incorporating ground en- gaging wheels at each end of each respective side member. At least one pair of axially aligned wheels are driven by conventional hydraulic motors. The center portion of the frame incorpo- rates a substantially centrally located cavity within which cavity is a bored pedestal mounted ring gear. A man sized cab having a pivot mounted to its underside for rotatable engagement within the bore of the pedestal is mounted upon the upper surface of the frame and is free to rotate through 360 degrees upon the frame. The cab further includes a hydraulic motor and pinion gear mounted to the cab's undersurface such that the pinion gear engages the pedestal ring gear. When activated, the cab motor drives the pinion gear which "walks" around the ring gear forcing the cab to rotate about the frame. A conventional vibratory compactor head is mounted to the front of the cab in the vertical plane and is operable both upwards and downwards in the vertical plane by the actions of a hydraulic ram. An internal combustion engine is mounted to the rear of the cab and rotates about the frame in unison with the cab. The engine provides power for the on-board hydraulic and electrical systems. Scraping blades are affixed to each end of each of the frame side members so that, as the frame move along over a centrally aligned trench, the earth piled to either side of the trench is forced into the trench. The compactor head follows behind the blades and compacts the fill into the trench. The cab may be rotated through a full 360 degrees to retrace the first pass over the trench without the need to move the frame off the trench, thus eliminating the need for a relatively large maneuvering space typically required when conventional equip- ment is utilized.
