The present invention is directed to providing self-propelled casting within a fishing apparatus that is the functional replacement of a conventional rod and reel combination. The system and method of the present invention advantageously include utilization of a self-propelled casting apparatus (10) that employs a constant torque spring motor (20) to provide a flat torque/force response both in the loading and releasing phases of a casting cycle. The casting apparatus (10) employs a point-and-release method of safely and accurately casting a bobber (85) or other article of fishing tackle over a specified distance.
